Surya, Solar Deity
Surya, solar deity. Stone sculpture, South India, 11th-12th century Important stone sculpture representing Surya, the sun god of Hindu mythology, identifiable by his tall headdress and serene face encircled by a radiant halo. The deity is depicted with several symbolic attributes in his hands (solar disc, lotus, or club, depending on the variant), now partially fragmented. This work, from South India and dated between the 11th and 12th centuries, illustrates the vigor of medieval Indian art and its taste for monumental representations of protective deities. The hieratic treatment of the face, the richness of the sculpted ornaments, and the contained power of the bust reflect the solar spirituality associated with Surya, the deity who governs the cycle of time, light, and prosperity. An architectural or statuary fragment intended for a sanctuary, this sculpture retains great plastic force and a manifest sacred character.
