Celestial Globe By Charles Dien
Celestial globe "Dedicated to Mr. A. Bouvard, Astronomer | as a tribute of gratitude | by Ch[arles] Dien | Paris, E. Bertaux Éditeur" (mention present on the cartouche).
Globe mounted on a turned wooden stand painted in black, with 12 spindles printed on paper. The positions of the stars are calculated for the year 1840. Charles Dien Père worked as an engraver for the Delamarche family around 1819. His son, Charles Dien (1809-1870), astronomer and cosmographer, was the author of several celestial globes, including this one. He published several atlases on astronomical phenomena and in 1833 a Description et usage du globe céleste. Son of Dien made globes mainly between 1840 and 1850, and until 1841.
This globe is dedicated to Alexis Bouvard (1767-1843), French astronomer, assistant astronomer of the Bureau of Longitudes in 1795, whose observations led to the discovery of the planet Neptune. He is known for the discovery of 8 comets and for his astronomical tables of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus.
Beautiful patina, slight friction. The globe is not mounted on its original stand and does not have its horizon table or its meridian circle.
