Large Sukuma Mask Tanzania
I offer you this large Sukuma mask from Tanzania. It was collected in Burundi in the 1970s. The Sukuma people live in northern Tanzania in a region south of Lake Victoria. Their masks have a very raw, very expressive appearance. These masks belonged to secret societies that were banned after 1905. Some holes seem to have been filled with resin, the teeth are made of bamboo, the eyes are outlined in white, the interior is attacked by wood-boring insects, height 37 cm.
