Auguste Zwiller was born in Didenheim, a small village in Alsace near Mulhouse in 1850 and died in 1938 in Neuilly-sur-Seine. His first name was actually Marie Augustin. He was a student of G. Boulanger and J. Lefebvre at the Académie Julian. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français from 1882 and received numerous distinctions, including the Bronze Medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition. He exhibited at the salon of the Société des Amis des Arts in Strasbourg and at the salon of the Amis des Arts in Mulhouse. After settling in Neuilly, he pursued a Parisian career and was recognized as a renowned portraitist and a specialist in nudes.
