This drawing is a beautiful testament to the cultural melting pot of what was the School of Paris. This movement emerged primarily at the beginning of the 20th century, with an influx of artists from Central and Eastern Europe, notably Jews fleeing persecution and settling in the French capital, then a hub of cultural activity.
This is a portrait of the great French composer of Romanian origin, Marcel Mihalovici, at the age of 23, drawn in 1922 by the Ukrainian-born artist Adolphe Feder, then 36 years old.
Aizik Feder, known as Adolphe Feder, was born in Odessa in 1886 and died in Auschwitz in 1943. After studying in Berlin and Geneva, he moved to Paris in 1908, where he studied at the Académie Julian in the studio of Henri Matisse, with whom he became friends. Matisse's influence is evident in his early paintings, exhibited at the Salon d'Automne from 1912 onward.
A member of the Society of Russian Artists with Mikhail Larionov and Ossip Zadkine, and close to Othon Friesz, Amedeo Modigliani, and Jacques Lipchitz, with whom he frequented La Rotonde, he was also a collector of tribal and naive art. This portrait was painted in his Montparnasse studio, filled, among other things, with African art and described in Mihalovici's handwritten note.
Works by Feder are held in Paris at the National Museum of Modern Art, in several museums in Israel and Switzerland (Petit Palais Museum in Geneva).
Marcel Mihalovici (1898 Bucharest - 1985 Paris) was a French composer of Romanian origin who was a prominent figure in the avant-garde musical life during the interwar period.
