German artist born in Munich in 1901, Karl Wolf entered the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown in 1926 in the class of Franz von Stuck. From 1929 onwards, he exhibited meticulously observed local landscapes, as well as caricatures with a somber connotation, closely reflecting the spirit of von Stuck's art.
Primarily a caricaturist, landscape painter, and still-life artist, Karl Wolf created several works in the New Objectivity style during the interwar period, addressing social issues such as the rise of private transportation and nightlife in the big city.
This watercolor, dated 1931, belongs to this period and demonstrates a distinctive technique in which the watercolor is deliberately rubbed to create blurred areas.
Other works from this series are featured in the catalog of the exhibition recently dedicated to the artist by the Fichter Gallery in Frankfurt (see photos).
