Léon Garraud – Self-portrait In Costume – Oil On Panel – 20th Century – Signed
Artist: Garraud Léon (1877 – 1961, France)
Self-portrait of the painter Léon Garraud, painted in oil on a wooden panel.
He represents himself from ¾ face, staring into the viewer's eyes. As usual for Garraud, the composition is sober, executed in a range of browns.
The execution is extremely precise, almost photographic.
The work is signed lower right. It is in very good condition. It is offered in a light carved wooden frame from the 1930s, in good condition (slight lack of gilding).
The artist
Léon Garraud was born in Creuse, his father was a mason.
He trained in painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. He exhibited in this city from 1902 and regularly thereafter. Garraud painted still lifes, portraits, landscapes, scenes of contemporary life, interior scenes, nudes. He practiced pen drawing as well as watercolor, gouache and of course oil. He perfected his portrait technique with François Guiguet, achieving an impressive level of detail.
Léon Garraud was known for his independent spirit and his lack of interest in public relations (see article on the back of the proposed work).
A retrospective of his works was organized at the Maison Ravier in Morestel in 1993.
