The Womb Chair stands as one of the most celebrated icons of 20th-century design, born from the collaboration between Eero Saarinen, Charles Eames, and Florence Knoll. Conceived in 1940 at Florence Knoll’s request for “a chair that felt like a basket full of pillows,” it was later produced by Knoll in 1948, marking a decisive step in the evolution of modern furniture.
This first-edition example has been fully restored and reupholstered in a luxurious mottled red and white wool fabric by Maison Lelièvre. Its sculptural shell, crafted from reinforced resin padded with foam and resting on a polished tubular steel base, combines structural innovation with warmth and comfort. The Womb Chair remains an enduring expression of Saarinen’s belief that modern design should embrace both form and humanity.
