A superb old Buddhist ritual mask carved in wood and polychromed, depicting a protective spirit (raksha) or a wrathful deity, probably Mahakala, the guardian of the Dharma in Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism.
Such masks were worn during Cham ritual dances in Himalayan monasteries (Nepal and Tibet). Their purpose was to repel evil spirits and protect the community.
The fierce expression, with bulging eyes, bared fangs, and a divine third eye on the forehead, symbolizes the power to destroy ignorance and the protection of sacred truth.
Well-carved and expressive, with traces of original old polychromy in red, yellow, green, and blue.
Surface wear, pigment losses, and ancient worm holes consistent with genuine age and ritual use.
The worm activity is long inactive, and the piece is structurally sound and stable.
Date: 19th century
Origin: Himalaya (Nepal or Tibet)
Material: carved and polychromed wood
Dimensions: 26 × 20 cm
A rare and authentic piece of Himalayan Buddhist ritual art, full of character and spiritual energy.
