Antique Indian Silver Anklets Repurposed In Nepal As Ritual Offering Dishes, C1900

A rare and visually striking pair of antique Indian solid silver anklets, later repurposed in Nepal as small ritual offering dishes or containers.

Originally crafted in Rajasthan or Gujarat in the late 19th to early 20th century, these heavy anklets are of traditional tribal form and made in solid silver, richly decorated with dense applied beadwork and repeating floral rosette motifs. The bold, sculptural design and substantial curved profile are characteristic of Indian anklets worn low on the ankle.

At a later date, the pieces were adapted in Nepal for ritual or domestic use. Each anklet has been fitted with a copper interior lining and a base plate, engraved with a central radiating floral motif, transforming them into small dishes or offering vessels. This type of reuse is characteristic of Nepalese metalwork traditions, where older silver ornaments were repurposed into functional or ceremonial objects, including temple offerings and domestic ritual use.

The combination of Indian craftsmanship and Nepalese adaptation gives these pieces a particularly appealing cross-cultural character, making them of interest to collectors of Himalayan, Nepalese, and ethnographic silver.
