Portrait of a child
Circa 1920
Plaster
H. 31 cm
Signed and dated: R. Chaleyssin / 19**
Rose Chaleyssin was a Lyon sculptor active in the 1920s and 1930s. At the Salon d'Automne of 1923, the City of Lyon acquired a terracotta sculpture representing a seated woman, now in the collection of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon. In 1924, a fountain project in plaster was reproduced in the booklet for the Salon d'Automne of that year. Rose Chaleyssin was the daughter of Francisque Chaleyssin, a cabinetmaker and decorator, who ran the Maison Chaleyssin, a major furniture manufacturer in Lyon. Her husband was André Ducaroy, a famous designer of modern furniture. This charming bas-relief depicting a girl or a boy - at the time, this haircut was for all children - is influenced by those of Ovide Yencesse.
