Jean Tarrit was born in 1865 in Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne in the Ain region between Villefranche-sur-Saône and Bourg-en-Bresse. The son of a clog maker, his talent for drawing and sculpture was recognised by his family and neighbours, including the local Mayor who sponsored him, and he entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. From 1895, he exhibited regularly at the Salon du Printemps in Lyon and the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris. He created two very important works for his hometown of Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne: an absolutely magnificent Saint Sebastian carved in wood in for the church of Saint-André in 1906, and later, in 1922, the war memorial for the town. In the second decade of the 20th century, Tarrit traveled frequently to Morocco, eventually settling in Tangier. Indeed, this bust of an imposing woman that I am proposing was sculpted in Casablanca in 1938. The bust is truly impressive: an example of uncompromising classicism, but also a true portrait that reveals the character of the woman, a face that is both timeless and individualised.
