HippolyteLéty, born in Vienne an ancient town situated 35 km south of Lyon on the riverRhône, went to the Lyon School of Fine Arts where he studied under Tony Zac andAlexandre François Bonnardel, and then to the School of Fine Arts in Pariswhere he was taught by Léon Bonnat, Ferdinand Humbert et Luc-Olivier Merson. Hebegan exhibiting at the Salons in Lyon and in Paris from the mid-1890s. Formany years Léty was professor of painting at the Tourcoing School of Art nearthe Belgian border. But if working in the North, Léty’s heart remained in theSouth-East, and he is one of the great early-twentieth century landscapists ofthe wider region around Lyon: the Dauphiné, the Ardèche, the Drôme, the Loire,Bugey, and Savoy. This simple, beautiful, landscape with a farm and goldenfields seen through trees, is executed in subtle lively brush-work and delicateimpastos.
