Deligthful small leather box with a wooden core from late 17th or early 18th century, complete with all its original cut-out metal fittings: handle on the slightly domed lid, small ring on the front of the lid to lift it easily, finely cut rings and hooks, and a large keyhole on the lower part and the edge of the lid creating a unified look...
All the metal fittings are mounted on small iron plates, demonstrating both their quality of workmanship and partly explaining their excellent state of preservation (for example, the hooks on these boxes are often broken, missing, or replaced).
The leather is very well preserved, present on all sides and on the lid—even on the bottom.
The inside of the lid is covered with its original fabric for protecting letters and valuable documents, which were secured with fabric ties arranged in a cross pattern.
The lock is also present but non-functional, with a key changed.
The main interest of this little box lies in its small dimensions, just 16 * 11 * 8 cm, and in its very good state of preservation.
It will make a discreet and charming decorative element on a desk or an 18th-century dresser.
