DESCRIPTION
Magnificent anthropomorphic monoxyle sanza, with five metal lamellae, from the Luba-Hemba of southeastern Congo. The sound box extends into a female figure sitting on her heels, her hands resting on her thighs. The face, with delicate features and eyes shaped like "coffee beans," expresses great serenity. The prominent navel is surrounded by raised scarifications. The hairstyle, carefully pulled back, illustrates the refinement of the "cascading" headdresses of the Shankadi, neighbors of the Luba and the Hemba. It ends in an elegant four-lobed chignon. Beautiful patina of use.
