"Marco d'Oggiono 'san Giovannino' Leonardo Style Oil Painting On Poplar Panel (62x37.5 Cm) "
In this superb painted panel, Marco D'Oggiono (Oggiono 1475-Milan 1524) pays homage to the Master Leonardo, portraying a young Saint John with a vivid and intense expression, as only a true artist can convey. The similarities with other paintings depicting Saint John by D'Oggiono are evident, especially with the 'Madonna and Child' at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, in which the Child's physiognomy and expression share the same distinctive character. The painting, executed on a 62 x 37.5 cm poplar panel, comes from a Roman family who long remembered it as a work from Leonardo's circle. On the back, a very worn plate bears a 16th-century inscription, now mutilated and illegible. Two large letters 'G B' appear to be the initials of the Collector, the former owner. Also on the back are two different old export stamps. Undeniably, the color and intensity of the scene pervade this painting with a truly Leonardesque magic and make its attribution to Leonardo's disciple, Marco d'Oggiono, consistent.
