Basalt sculpture depicting a lion crouching ontwo legs, of Arab-Norman origin and likely of Fatimid craftsmanship. Thecharacter and frontal expression of the feline head are in directconnection with certain carved heads found in the tomb of Frederick II at thePalermo Cathedral. Notable are the power of the front legs and themighty claws, a flowing mane with neat, symmetrical tufts, and theforehead, which bears simple parallel wrinkles on a head with a flat skull.Small, piercing eyes of Eastern character, with a long,flat nose and an aggressively open mouth. Sicily, 12th–13th century. Dimensions: base 82 x 27 cm, height 72 cm.
