Basque Folk Art - Makhila Cane From The Ainciart Workshop - Larressore, 1888

Basque folk art - Makhila cane from the Ainciart workshop - Larressore, 1888Scarified medlar shaft. The brass ferrule at the bottom is engraved "J. Ainciart . Larresorro . 1888" (today, the workshop is called Ainciart-Bergara and perpetuates its know-how in the historic workshop of Larressore). The brass ferrule at the top of the handle is engraved "orrhoitzapena . 1888". Orrhoitzapena means souvenir in Euskara. The leather braiding of the handle, the collar and the strap is a restoration that was done by the Ainciart-Bergara workshop in Larressore a little less than 10 years ago. When the handle is unscrewed, the forged steel dart appears. The lower ferrule was formerly sealed, probably following the loss of the original clover or, as was sometimes the custom, in order to increase the impact force during defensive use.
