Superb engraving depicting Martin Van den Bogaert, known as Martin Desjardins, a Flemish sculptor who became a French citizen and was the official sculptor of Louis XIV. He is notably responsible for the famous statues and groups for the Invalides and the Palace of Versailles. The portrait, painted by Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659–1743), master of ceremonial portraiture, was engraved with a burin by Gérard Edelinck (1640–1707), considered one of the greatest engravers of his time. Our copy is a proof of the Chalcographie du Louvre, produced in the 20th century from the original plate held in the national collections.
