Rome was considered the quintessential stop on the Grand Tour, as it represented both privileged access to the historical heritage of previous centuries and the wonders of the Baroque era.
The artists' works, particularly the views of Rome and archaeological sites, helped shape and spread the imagery of the Grand Tour, creating a "myth" of European antiquities and of Italy as a cultural destination.
