"Meissen Porcelain Otter, Model By Max Esser"
Meissen hard-paste porcelain
figure of an otter, model introduced 1926 by Max Esser; this example likely
mid-20th century. Crisp white glaze (weiss), the animal described by a taut
S-curve and sweeping tail around a block plinth with wave relief. Moulded
signature M. ESSER to the base side. Underside with underglaze crossed-swords
and impressed swords, model 78713, and weiss annotation; all marks as
photographed and consistent with the model. Esser’s animalier work is prized
for the balance of stylization and naturalistic focus; a Böttger stoneware
version of this Otter won the Grand Prix in Paris, 1937.
