Wikipedia, Thank you:
There are two versions of Mazeppa with Wolves. The original painting was created in 1798 by Carle Vernet. The original work had been damaged by Horace Vernet in his studio while he was practicing fencing. This incident prompted painter to create a replica, which was acquired by Calvet Foundation in 1826. The romanticized life of hero hetman Mazeppa inspired Victor Hugo as well as many painters and musicians, particularly with regard to his crossing of plains of Ukraine tied to the back of a wild horse.
