Carved Wood Shell, Painted, Gilded, Beautiful Coquillage, Late 18th Century
Beautiful large cup, carved soft wood, in the shape of a giant shell with deep concave reliefs, faded to black, the edges of the ribs, like the butt, being gold leaf.
It is an Italian work, late 18th or early 19th, of very good quality, it would seem, because of the suspension hole, that it was used as a wall shell, but it can also be placed on horizontal section...
Good dimensions, 32cm x 24cm;
Recently restored by a good craftsman, (a split-break), the shell is now impeccable.
