John Piper (1903-1992) / Castle Circa 1955 / Original Signed And Numbered Lithograph

Artist: John Piper (1903-1992)
John Piper (1903-1992) – British painter, printmaker and decorator, a major figure in 20th-century art in the United Kingdom. Piper is particularly renowned for his architectural views, poetic landscapes and interpretations of historic monuments, often imbued with a romantic yet melancholic atmosphere. This color lithograph, in perfect condition and carefully framed, is numbered 49/75 and signed in the lower right margin. It depicts an overgrown wall in the foreground, behind which opens a hilly landscape dominated by a castle on a hill. The building, massive but distant, stands out against a sky of subtle tones. The composition combines architectural elements and wild nature, a recurring motif for Piper. The treatment of the relief, the silhouette of the castle and the light evoke a scene from Wales, a region where Piper stayed and worked on many occasions, producing several series devoted to its castles and churches. Although it is not possible to identify the precise site with certainty, the structure could be inspired by ruined Welsh castles such as Carreg Cennen, Dinefwr or Denbigh, which the artist visited. Printed by the Atelier Mourlot, in Paris, renowned for the exceptional quality of its editions and a privileged collaborator of great names such as Picasso, Chagall, Matisse or Braque. Technique and edition: Original color lithograph on Arches paper. Numbered 49/75 in pencil in the lower left margin. Hand-signed in the lower right margin by the artist. Perfect condition, fresh colors, intact margins.
