Mariette Lydis, born Marietta Ronsperger in 1887, Viennese artist who settled in Paris in the interwar period, distinguished herself as a painter, draftsman and lithographer. She is particularly renowned for her delicate female portraits, where the finesse of the line and the subtlety of the colors express an intimate atmosphere, often marked by melancholy. This 1938 print belongs to a series created to illustrate Henri de Montherlant's novel Les Jeunes Filles, published in Paris by the luxury Govone publishing house. It reflects the artist's most productive Parisian period, just before his departure for Argentina, and perfectly illustrates his refined style, sometimes similar to that of Foujita or Tamara de Lempicka.
