"12th Century Marble Sculpture Depicting A Scene With Surrounding Engraving On A Stand"
Magnificent marble sculpture from northern Italy, dating from the 12th century, depicting a scene where a horseman is probably arresting two individuals, with spectators in the background. It is surrounded by a Latin engraving: "Ernite servante juestra crimine evigious aeber tus divino", which roughly translates as "They keep their oaths to your lord". It is believed to be a scene of capturing religious opponents, with the spectators appearing to be holding a snake, probably in reference to the Garden of Eden. The marble is absolutely magnificent, subtle in shadow, but glowing wonderfully against the light. Presented on a contemporary metal base.
