Le tre Grazie
Alabaster, cm alt. 33 - Base, cm 18 x 13
Daughters of the god Zeus and the nymph Eurinome, called by the Greeks Cariti, were the goddesses of joy, charm and beauty. Their names were Aglaia, 'she who shines', Euphrosyne, 'she who brings joy and gladness', and Talia, 'she who brings flowers'. Graces presided over banquets, dances, and meetings of the gods, spreading joy and friendship among gods and mortals. Often the goddesses accompanied Aphrodite and Eros, gods who presided over Love, and together with the Muses sang and danced for the gods on Mount Olympus to the sound of the lyre played by Apollo. In some legends Aglaia was married to Hephaestus, the blacksmith of the gods. They gave artists and poets, such as the Muses, the ability to create beautiful works of art.
They were usually depicted as dancing young virgins and embraced to form a circle. Famous are the verses of Ugo Foscolo, who composed to praise the graceful and soft sensuality of the Three Graces sculpted by Antonio Canova:
Perhaps (or I hope!) Creator of Numi,
You will give spirit to the Graces
That now of thy man arose from the marble.
