"Limestone Canopic Jar Lid On Stand, Old Kingdom (2700 - 2200 Bc)"
Beautifully aged and patinated canopic jar lid in carved limestone dating from the Old Kingdom of Egypt (2700-2200 BC), presented on a contemporary acrylic and metal stand. Canopic jars were used to preserve embalmed organs during mummification and to preserve the viscera of the soul. These empty jars have also been found buried in intact tombs, suggesting that they also served as a funerary symbol. Although details are unclear, an animal head can be seen on this example.
