Head Of A Woman – Marble Fragment From Around The 1st Century Ad.
Female Head – Marble Fragment around the 1st century AD.
This sculpted marble fragment represents a female head in relief, probably detached from an architectural or decorative ensemble. The features, although partially eroded, reveal careful modeling: oval face, closed mouth with slightly drooping corners, straight but damaged nose, and marked eyebrow arches.
The hair, treated with a certain naturalism, is organized in wavy locks swept back, typical of the imperial Roman style of the 1st century AD. This type of female representation, inserted into decorative ensembles (pediments, sarcophagi, votive or architectural reliefs), illustrates the influence of classical Greek and Hellenistic art on Roman sculpture.
The fragment testifies both to the technical virtuosity of the Roman workshops and to the aesthetic and symbolic function that the female image had in the ancient decorative repertoire. Fragmentary.
Noticeable surface wear, especially on the face (nose and eyes), but satisfactory preservation of the general structure and hair. Some traces of polychromy or deposits are still visible.
