Piece of Kushan frieze - 1st to 3rd century
Double-sided sculpture from the Kushan period from the Mathura region of India. This work is characteristic of the sculptural art of this period (1st-3rd century). Made of red sandstone, an emblematic material of the region, it presents a neat iconography.
Each side of the sculpture represents a distinct figure with a grotesque character on one side and a chimera on the other.
Our object is very similar to the sculpture of the Ashmolean museum number EA1997,182 which is represented in the last photo of the carousel.
