"Half-moon Chest Of Drawers From The Louis XVI Period, Parisian Work. "
Elegant half-moon shaped chest of drawers, opening with two drawers on the front and two side doors in the corner. The frame is made of oak and beech, the drawers are made of oak, and the drawer fronts and doors are made of softwood. This neoclassical piece of furniture is soberly veneered with rosewood cut in rising grain, forming large panels framed by green stained wood fillets joined in the Greek style. The chest of drawers rests on four tapered legs decorated with false fluting, ending in gilt bronze sabots. The uprights are veneered with rosewood and enhanced with three false flutings in light sycamore and black stained wood. The front uprights are enriched with gilt bronze offcuts; the cabinetmaker carefully adjusted the height of the fluting to accommodate these ornaments. The drawers and doors feature beautiful medallion lock entries with ribboned bows, typical of the Louis XVI style, and are equipped with pull handles with pearl rings resting on rosettes. All the bronzes, in period gilt bronze, are original, with old gilding showing natural wear. The two drawers and the two doors have their original iron locks, operated by an old key. The doors are mounted on period brass hinges, and their interior is lined with oak soles. The chest of drawers is topped with its white marble molded with a quarter-round fillet, period marble showing some wear stains, usual on this type of old stone. The drawers slide perfectly. The furniture has been cleaned and revarnished with a French polish, giving it a beautiful patina and highlighting the finesse of its veneer.
