"Yvon Masse (1892–1957) – “lively Street In The Basque Country”"
Watercolor on paper signed lower right Dimensions: 25 x 21 cm (view) – 33 x 29 cm (framed) Simple and elegant wooden frame, in very good condition Charming street scene in a village in the Basque Country, animated by stylized characters strolling under the arcades and at the foot of traditional houses. The work, bathed in a soft light, subtly restores the picturesque and warm atmosphere of an old village. The mastery of the washes and the delicate palette are characteristic of the work of Yvon Masse, a discreet but talented artist, active in the first half of the 20th century. Yvon MASSE (1892–1957) is a French artist still little documented but whose several works circulate on the art market, in particular landscapes, views of villages and rural scenes done in watercolor. He is distinguished by a lively and sensitive style, between academic tradition and regionalist spirit. His depictions of local architecture—particularly in the Southwest—reveal a keen sense of observation and a desire to document a popular, regional way of life. The work is in good condition, with fresh colors and unvarnished. The spine is properly closed and the mount is old. Ready to hang.
