Asian Bronze Planter Incense Burner - 19th Century - China

Superb 19th century Asian incense burner, made of antique bronze, with two finely sculpted handles. Its authentic patina testifies to its age and gives it a timeless charm. The rounded and slightly domed body is topped with a subtly flared lip at the top and bottom, highlighting the elegance of its lines. The interior is lined with a copper basin, adding both functionality and refinement to the piece. The handles are adorned with stylized dragon heads, an emblematic motif of Chinese decorative art, symbolizing power and protection. This incense burner was traditionally used to burn incense during rituals, meditation sessions or in daily life, in order to purify the atmosphere and promote serenity. Today, it can be diverted into a planter or cachepot, bringing an original and refined touch to any interior. Placed in a bathroom, it becomes an elegant container for rolled towels, adding a decorative note full of taste and exoticism. On the underside, a hand-painted Chinese calligraphy symbol offers a traditional good luck charm. It translates to “profit of brocade” or “elegant benefit,” which may be interpreted as a poetic expression of prosperity.

So a phrase like 锦利 or similar could be interpreted as “elegant profit” or “splendid benefit”, often used in poetic or auspicious contexts to wish someone refined success or flourishing fortune. It’s not a common idiom, but it fits within the tradition of Chinese calligraphy being used as a symbolic blessing—especially on decorative objects. This is a genuine antique that was truly used in its time. With a few small dents and signs of wear consistent with age, as visible in the photos, which do not detract from its charm or authenticity.
