Haviland, Limoges — “calanques” Fish Service, A 14-piece Polychrome Decorative Suite
White porcelain fish service – 14 pieces Polychrome marine décor, green rims and moulded rocaille motifs
Produced in the second half of the 20th century by the Haviland manufactory, this “Calanques” fish service represents one of the most accomplished interpretations of the marine repertoire developed by the house. Crafted in white porcelain with a shaped, undulating rim highlighted by green fillets and adorned with moulded rocaille motifs, the ensemble stands out for the remarkable vibrancy of its polychrome decoration.
Each piece unfolds a narrative scene inspired by the Mediterranean world: fish, crustaceans, shells, seaweed and fishing accessories form a rich iconographic vocabulary, rendered with naturalistic precision and a luminous palette. The “bouillabaisse spirit,” so characteristic of southern French decoration, is here reimagined with the technical finesse and chromatic discipline emblematic of Haviland.
The service forms a coherent decorative suite, in which each plate functions as an autonomous tableau, while the large platter and the sauceboat anchor the composition with sculptural presence. The balance between narrative exuberance and formal elegance gives this model a distinctive place within the production of the late 20th century.
