"Djenné Statuette"
This female terracotta statuette from the Djenné culture is presented kneeling, hands resting on her thighs. The stylized, slightly turned face expresses a certain interiority. She wears a sculpted pearl necklace, bracelets, as well as ritual scarifications on her torso and stomach. The elongated proportions, elaborate hairstyle, and treatment of the hands testify to a refined aesthetic specific to the terracotta productions of this flourishing civilization. These figures often accompanied the dead, playing a symbolic or protective role, and also reflecting the social or spiritual status of the deceased.
