"Set Of Four Louis XV Period Cabriolet Armchairs, Paris Circa 1760. "
Elegant set of four cabriolet armchairs, very comfortable thanks to their generous width and cushioned seats. They are made of molded beech, Parisian manufacture, dating from the reign of Louis XV, around 1760. These seats have a harmonious curve and beautiful proportions, characteristic of the Louis XV style in its late phase. The fretwork of the back extends without interruption to the armrest consoles, in a fluid movement highlighted by refined molding work. Note the absence of sculpture, leaving full scope for the play of lines and volumes. A very similar model appears in the reference work Le Mobilier Français – Les Sièges by Guillaume Janneau (illustration n°166), which highlights the flared silhouette of the back and the concordance between the curves of the belt and the lower crosspiece of the back, typical features of the last season of the Louis XV style. These armchairs are in good condition. They have undergone old restorations of use: we note in particular some redone ends of legs, as well as a reinforcement at the rear of the back of an armchair, made with a recessed and patinated metal leg, well integrated into the whole. The upholstery was made according to traditional techniques, with the seat crosspieces left visible on the inside. The seat is filled with feather cushions, comfortable and in excellent condition. The whole is covered with a precious blue crushed velvet with a stylized pomegranate motif, a luxurious textile perfectly suited to the Louis XV style. This fabric is in good general condition, well stretched, with only a small hole of 5 mm in diameter on a cushion and a few discreet stains without gravity. Sound structure, stable and comfortable seats, usable on a daily basis. A beautiful, homogeneous series, accurately representing the Parisian elegance of the 1760s.
