"Large Louis XV Style Cartel, 19th Century. "
Elegant Louis XV style table clock, made in the 19th century, in wood painted with Martin varnish on a green background powdered with gold, adorned with a delicate polychrome decoration of scattered flowers, in the spirit of the varnishes of the Rococo period. The whole is highlighted by a rich bronze ornamentation, entirely original, with rocaille decoration: scrolls, leafy falls, shells, floral scrolls and clasps, in a fluid and nervous composition, typical of the Louis XV aesthetic. The chased bronze dial has a central medallion with the effigy of Louis XIV, framed by a rich floral decoration. It is surrounded by enameled cartouches with Roman numerals for the hours, the minutes are engraved on the rim in Arabic numerals, all present, but showing some cracks and wear from use. The movement, from the period, is complete but needs to be revised. The original balance, decorated with the radiant sun of the Sun King, is preserved. However, the striking hammer is missing. Very decorative, this free-standing cartel clock illustrates the 19th century taste for precious reinterpretations of the Louis XV style, with care given to both the pictorial finish and the quality of the bronzes. This cartel clock dating from the mid-19th century comes from a private collection, the case was restored about ten years ago, it is in very good condition.
