Sublime and rare terracotta sculpture depicting a young girl carrying her brother on her back; made by the Villeroy & Boch factory in Merzig an der Ruhr ; Germany; resting on its original terracotta base.
Stamp on the base with the inscription "Villeroy & Boch"; signed and dated, "Wagmüller 1871".
From 1879, Villeroy & Boch created a workshop in Merzich for the manufacture of monumental terracotta and stoneware sculptures.
This sculpture is based on the original model that is made in marble and also in bronze by the famous contemporary artist and sculptor Michael Wagmüller (1831 - 1889) who also worked in England.
This particular sculpture was exhibited at the Universal Exhibition in Vienna (Austria) in 1873.
