Vintage albumen print signed by a wet stamp on the back. Probably a self-portrait of the photographer as was often practiced at that time, under the Arch of Pecile of Villa Adriana in Tivoli, near Rome. Villa Adriana in Tivoli, built by Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century, is an architectural complex famous for its buildings, gardens and works of art. The Pécile, the villa's emblematic structure, is a courtyard surrounded by a portico inspired by the Stoa Poikile in Athens. Decorated with paintings and sculptures, it served as a place for walking. Its name comes from the Latin "Poecile", meaning "painted" or "decorated". Fratelli Alinari, founded in Florence in 1852 by Leopoldo Alinari, is one of the oldest photographic companies in the world. His brothers Giuseppe and Romualdo joined him in 1854 to create Fratelli Alinari Fotografi Editori, a photographic workshop specializing in the documentation of Italian paintings, sculptures, architecture and monuments.
