"Mary Magdalene 17th Century Italian Religious Painting Oil On Canvas Unframed"
17th Century Italian oil on canvas painting depicting Penitent Magdalene according to classical iconography, dressed in beautiful drapery and seated near a table on which rests an open book, the ointments vase and the deposed jewelry. The saint is depicted with eyes raised heavenward, a sign of her devotion and penance, seeking redemption from sins committed. The unfraimed painting has a Lombard origin, dates back to 1600, has been re-lined and restored to a new stretcher and has some minor losses above the head and between the arms as documented in the photographic images.
Mary Magdalene, according to Christian tradition, had led a sinful life before she repented and converted to Christianity. The Legenda Aurea records that the Saint pilgrimed by fasting in the forests in southern France. A story, hers, that becomes exemplary of how repentance and prayer lead to that extreme asceticism resulting in rejection of the world and mortification of the body.
