Pair Of Gothic Caryatids – France – Early 16th Century
A work probably from Burgundy, Haute époque.
Our important pair of limestone uprights depicts two plump and solemn angels, beautifully draped, their arms crossed on their chests and their right hand covering their hearts. This last gesture symbolizes moral correctness and is an emblem of honesty. These architectural elements, such as lintels or jambs of gates or chimneys, possibly come from a cloister or a seigneurial property. Dimensions of each upright: 101 cm by 16 cm wide and 57 cm deep.
