"Fireplace Plate With A Cruciform Globe Cast In The 16th Century In Franche-comté (62x53 Cm)"
Very old fireback cast in the 16th century in Franche-Comté, it is provided with a cruciger globe topped with a cross called "moulés à la corde", using twisted carved wooden rods, between a pair of pot-bellied columns. The columns with plural meanings as for the coat of arms of the city of Besançon, evoke the ancient columns which still stood at the end of the 15th century at the top of the site of the citadel of Besançon, near the Roman road coming from Geneva, and can also be a reference to the columns of Hercules, one of the emblems of Charles V. Its weight is 69 kg. You can visit our site: www.claudeaugustin.com
