Beautiful representation of death of the great Jesuit missionary Francis Xavier, canonized circa 1622,
"In 1541, Francis Xavier embarked for Asia as papal nuncio. After a stay of several years in India, Goa and Cape Comorin, he continued his mission to Malacca and Moluccas, other Portuguese trading posts. The last three years of his life were devoted to evangelization of Japan, which was a success. He died on gates of China on island of Sancian, as evoked in famous paintings." Our terracotta: 32cm x 15cm x 16cm, weight: 3.1kg, anonymous, is neat, polychrome, one end of foot is missing. Some very small color losses.
