The History of Eterna was officially born on November 7, 1856. Its founders, Dr. Joseph Girard (surgeon) and Urs Shild, teacher, baptized the company U.Shild & Co. Shild was an accountant at F. Kunz & Girard, when one day he manages to become a partner, changing the name to Girard & Shild, producing drafts and pocket watches.
In 1866, Girard left the company and was replaced by Adolph Shild. , brother of Urs. In 1896, Adolph Shild leaves the company to found one under its own name: A. Shild or AS. In 1905, U. Shild & Co. took the name of Eterna.
The success of the Eterna arrives in 1908 with the first watch with integrated alarm. The history of the Eterna is in fact a good part of the history of modern watchmaking.
Eterna founded a new production company of mechanical movements in 1932 under the name of ETA and has expanded its production and current know-how with
the acquisition of Valjoux. In 1947 is born what will become a watch symbolic and legendary: the Eterna Kon Tiki. In 1948, another watch Eterna to success is released: the Eterna-Matic.
On June 30, 2012, Eterna is acquired by the Volant Ltd group.
