Object description :

"Auguste Leroux – Ballerina At The Mirror – Oil On Canvas – Circa 1920 – Signed – Frame "bouche""
Oil on canvas depicting a ballerina in a tutu, with points on her feet, looking at herself in a mirror.
The young woman is seen in profile, so it is her reflection that appears from the front. She stands gracefully, one hand on her hip and one leg slightly bent.
The composition is very sober: the woman's body occupies the center and the entire height of the painting. The mirror is fixed on a gray wall, without decoration. The red ground gives a touch of color to the scene.

The work is signed lower left. It is in very good condition, with no losses or retouching. This work was probably painted between 1910 and 1930. It is placed in an art deco style Bouche frame, made between 1920 and 1920. The frame is made of carved wood, decorated with waves and lattices, with a gray patina. It is in very good condition, with very small patina chips on the edges.

The artist
Auguste Leroux, born on April 14, 1871 in Paris and died in 1954, was a French painter, illustrator, and decorator, renowned for the finesse of his drawing, the richness of his compositions, and his commitment to classical ideals. He continued the French academic tradition while developing a personal style tinged with symbolism and preciousness.

The son of a cabinetmaker, Auguste Leroux showed great skill in drawing at an early age. He entered the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris, where he received rigorous training from masters such as Léon Bonnat. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a member. At the same time, he was appointed professor at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he trained several generations of young artists. He was also awarded the Legion of Honor for his contribution to French culture.

Auguste Leroux's style is deeply influenced by his academic training and his admiration for the Italian Renaissance. His art is distinguished by precision of drawing, harmony of forms and refinement in the treatment of figures, especially female. The bodies are represented with a great sense of anatomy, in graceful poses, often inspired by ancient statuary.

Although he lived at the time of the emergence of the avant-gardes (cubism, fauvism, surrealism), Auguste Leroux remains faithful to a more classical and humanist vision of art. He embodies a form of elegant resistance to radical modernity, without being backward-looking: his refined and sensitive style transcends fashions.
Even today, his works are exhibited in several French museums (notably at the Musée d'Orsay) and appreciated for their timeless beauty and technical virtuosity.
