Giovanni Giordano Lanza (1827-1890), Saints Theodore Church Of Athens.
Artist: Giovanni Giordano Lanza ( 1827-1890)
Watercolor by Giordano Lanza of the Byzantine Church of Saints Theodore in Athens. Born in Naples (Kingdom of the Two Sicilies), G. Lanza received a silver medal in 1852 for “The Interior of the Church of Santa Chiara”. The Bourbon royal family commissioned him to paint “The Interior of the Sacristy of San Martino”, for which he was also awarded. In 1860, commissioned by the Marquis of Sassenay and for an album of Napoleon III, he produced two watercolors representing “A View of the Marina of Santa Lucia” and “An Interior of the Gerolimini”. Our watercolor is a testimony from the second half of the 19th century, full of precision and detail (faithful to the artist's style), of the Byzantine religious building from the mid-11th century located at the northwest corner of Klafthmónos Square in Athens. The monument is considered one of the best preserved from the Meso-Byzantine period (843–1204) in the Greek capital. Signed lower right. Very good condition. 20th century frame, gilded wood mat, under glass.
