Clock Empire "apollon" Cleret Student Of Robin
Large and sumptuous Empire period clock, circa 1810, signed on the dial
"Cleret, student of Robin," a clockmaker listed in the Tardy dictionary
of French clocks. Solid, thick bronze construction, splendid mercury
gilding with gold, contrasting matte and shiny gold. The decorations
are very finely chiseled, including an imposing sculpture of Apollo
playing the lyre, richly decorated with laurels and a Cupid in the
center behind the strings.
A large, finely ornamented zither rests on a pillar whose front houses the annular white enamel dial, highlighted by an outline of water leaves, a corner of flowers, and a frieze of torches connected by a garland, ribbon, and laurel wreath. The base is adorned on its front with wreaths of flowers, musical instruments, a bee, and a goose.
Original mechanism without modification, wire suspension, ringing on the hours and half hours on an old bell.
