Lyon School of the 18th century. Oil on canvas depicting a lively architectural whim, on the edge of a canal. Signed lower center "Mariege" and dated 1723. Canvas dimensions: 81 x 62 cm. 18th century frame in carved gilded wood. Jean Mariège (active between 1721 and 1728) renowned for his views of imaginary ports with statues and oriental figures. A little-known painter from Lyon, Jean Mariège illustrates the fashion for whims in the 18th century. The 18th century saw a craze for architectural whims with an Italian connotation.
