" Bullfighting. "the Year Of Your Alternativa, 1927 ""
Carlo Ruano Llapis (1878-1950) is considered the creator of a new genre in posters: the illustrated poster announcing bullfights. Born in Orba, he studied in Valencia, despite the financial difficulties caused by the death of his father. He continued his studies at the San Carlos Academy of Fine Arts, and in 1909, he was awarded a gold medal at the regional exhibition, with a scholarship that he used to study in Italy. His passion for the world of bullfighting led him to illustrate events related to this universe. He exhibited in numerous fairs in Spain, but also in France, Latin America, and New York. He even worked for Hollywood, directing bullfight scenes. Since his death, many retrospectives have taken place in Spain to celebrate his talent and the brilliance he gave to the bullfighting world. This watercolor represents a cape pass made by Félix Rodriguez Ruiz, a famous young Spanish bullfighter. Born in 1905, nicknamed "Dinamita" in 1922, he became a matador on April 3, 1927, the day of his "alternativa", which marked his entry into the closed circle of great professionals. He retired in 1932. This watercolor commemorates a crucial year in the career of this brilliant bullfighter. It takes up the codes, full of elegance and dynamism, that Llapis would develop in his posters.
