Georges Jamotte (1880-1940) The Lady With The Cat Portrait
Artist: Georges Jamotte
Georges Bernard JAMOTTE
(Ixelles, 1880 - Etterbeek, 1940)
The lady with the cat
Pastel, gouache and charcoal on paper mounted on cardboard
H. 31.5 cm; L. 22 cm
Signed lower right, dated 1925
Provenance: Private collection, Toulouse (preserved with several other works by the painter)
Belgian painter, Georges Jamotte produced colorful, cheerful paintings throughout his career, depicting numerous subjects . Portraits, genre scenes and still lifes, he tried his hand brilliantly at all these styles. He held several exhibitions in Brussels where he lived, and illustrated several literary works. Part of his art lies in caricature, of which a work devoted solely to portraits of musicians was published almost thirty years ago. Our subject, placed between the portrait and the life scene, presents us with a bourgeois interior from the 1920s where a young woman with hair reads a letter. Sitting at the foot of the staircase of the house, she is observed by her cat, synonymous with independence and freedom.
